Key points
- Uses IS-code dry-volume factor 1.54 over wet concrete volume.
- Cement bag volume assumed 0.0347 m³ (50 kg PPC).
- Adds a user-controlled wastage % on top of computed material.
Formula & how it works
Wet volume = L × W × T (converted to m³).
Dry volume = wet × 1.54.
Cement volume = dry × (cement part / total parts). Cement bags = cement m³ ÷ 0.0347.
Sand cft = sand m³ × 35.31; Aggregate cft = aggregate m³ × 35.31.
Water ≈ 25 L per 50 kg bag (w/c ≈ 0.5). Wastage % is applied on top.
Worked example
- Slab 10 ft × 10 ft × 5 in with mix 1:2:4.
- Wet volume = 10 × 10 × (5/12) × 0.0283 = 1.18 m³.
- Dry = 1.18 × 1.54 = 1.82 m³.
- Cement = 1.82 × 1/7 = 0.26 m³ ≈ 7.5 bags → 8 bags with 5% wastage.
- Sand ≈ 18 cft, Aggregate ≈ 37 cft, Water ≈ 200 L.
Expert tips & mistakes to avoid
- Always add a 5–7% wastage buffer — mid-slab shortages cost more than the buffer bags.
- For engineered members (RCC columns/beams), follow the structural drawing over any calculator.
- Order cement in tranches — bags older than 90 days lose strength.

Frequently asked questions
Which mix should I use for a residential slab?
+
Most residential slabs in this belt use 1:2:4 (M15) unless the engineer specifies M20 (1:1.5:3). Follow the drawing when available.
Why is the dry volume 1.54× wet?
+
Fresh concrete compacts when wet and voids fill up, so IS practice takes dry material at 1.54 times wet volume to avoid shortage.
